Annual Yukon Geoscience Forum Banquet Raises Over $30K

December 10, 2015

Whitehorse, Yukon – The Yukon Chamber of Mines (YCM) is pleased to announce that the generosity of the territory’s mineral exploration and development industry and Yukon Government paired with the fundraising coordination efforts of Northern Safety Network Yukon (NSNY) raised over $30,000 for the Yukon Imagination Library (YIL) during one very special evening in November.

Through a silent and live auction hosted by the YCM at the 43rd Annual Yukon Geoscience Forum Banquet, $15,555.00 was donated by industry, which will be matched by the Yukon Government for a total of $31,110 to directly support the YIL.

Established in the Yukon in 2007 by the Rendezvous Rotary Club of Whitehorse, the YIL provides one free book per month to every enrolled Yukon child from their birth to the age of five – potentially 60 age-appropriate books to each child before he or she enters Kindergarten.

“The success of this annual fundraiser for the Yukon Imagination Library clearly demonstrates the Yukon mining industry’s commitment to improving the lives of Yukoners,” said YCM President Mike Burke. “Industry realizes we’re in it together.”

“The Yukon Imagination Library extends sincere thanks to the Yukon Chamber of Mines, to all the industry members who raised their hands or placed a bid in the auctions, to the Northern Safety Network Yukon staff and to the Yukon Government for its commitment to family literacy in the territory,” said YIL Chair and Rendezvous Rotary member Claire Derome. “Over 1,500 children receive free books every month due to the efforts of Yukon volunteers and the generosity of our partners.”

“The Northern Safety Network Yukon team has coordinated the event’s silent auction for several years now and we are thrilled to be involved in such a worthy initiative,” said NSNY Executive Director Sheila Sergy. “Improved literacy for our territory’s children and families is imperative to lifelong learning and success and NSNY is committed to help make that a reality throughout Yukon communities.”
