Whitehorse, Yukon – The Yukon Chamber of Mines (YCM), in partnership with Yukon Women in Mining (YWIM) and more than two dozen local exploration, mining and service and supply companies, are celebrating Yukon Mining & Geology Week and all that a healthy and responsible industry contributes to the territory.

The week’s activities – geared to help Yukoners better understand the industry – commenced on Tuesday, May 19 with a kick off reception, in concert with the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce. Held at the YCM’s new office in the Calcite Centre, almost 100 industry and business representatives attended, which like all the week’s events was free.

“This special week aims to showcase the innumerable aspects of responsible exploration and mining and truly includes something for Yukoners of all ages to take in, learn from and enjoy,” said YCM Executive Director Jonas Smith.

“While we celebrate the industry, as the Yukon’s largest private sector employer and contributor both economically and socially, we’re also asking Yukoners to reflect on what our territory, and our quality of life, would look like without the industry and all the hard-working, committed individuals who lead and innovate.”

This kick-off event unveiled the YCM’s ‘Mining Friendly’ initiative; window decals for Yukoners’ workplaces or vehicles to demonstrate their support for responsibility and sustainability.

The decals are attached below. Attendees were also encouraged to bring a donation to the Food Bank Society of Whitehorse to help support the charity’s efforts in 18 communities in the territory and northern B.C.

Wednesday, May 20 features a fully-subscribed youth career day jointly hosted by Casino Mining and Alkan Air, which allowed Yukon high school students to learn more about the respective industries and how they work together. The Yukon Geological Survey (YGS) and Gladiator Metals are also hosting YGS’ ever-popular walking tour of the Whitehorse Copperbelt.

Thursday, May 21 includes a Lunch and Learn at Yukon University’s Centre for Northern Innovation in Mining (CNIM) from noon to 1:00 pm focused on Build Canada Strong and a Casino Mining-Alkan Air reception at the mining company’s new office on Second Avenue.

“Yukon Mining and Geology week both forges and highlights partnerships across sectors,” said Yukon Women in Mining President Lauren Humble. “The events are fun, educational and barrier free, allowing us to connect with our community and with one another as an industry.”

The week’s culmination, and cornerstone event, is Yukon Mining & Geology Week’s Discovery Camp at Shipyards Park on Friday, May 22 from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.

This year’s event features 18 companies offering hands-on activities encompassing mining, exploration, geology, environmental responsibility, health and safety, renewable energy and more.

Over 430 Yukon students are registered to attend and all Yukoners are invited and encouraged to attend.

“Whether familiar with responsible exploration and mining in the territory, and the dedicated local businesses who support the industry, or brand new to the Yukon and the industry here, we hope

Yukoners come out to Discovery Camp, connect with the exhibitors, ask lots of questions and take away even one thing they may not have considered before about how the industry makes their lives and their livelihoods work,” added Smith.

Friday’s Discovery Camp is also free and open to all.
